The side has been selected based on Test, ODI and T20I performance between January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.

The team was selected by CricketHER editorial team Raf Nicholson and Syd Egan, with Nicholson also holding the role of WCM’s women’s cricket correspondent.

The team is made up of four England players, two South Africans, two Australians, and one India, Pakistan and West Indies player apiece. Tammy Beaumont and Smriti Mandhana are the two openers in the team, with Lizelle Lee slotting in at No.3. The middle order is made up of Nat Sciver, Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath, with Amy Jones taking the gloves. Hayley Matthews sits at No.8, with Sophie Ecclestone, Fatima Sana and Shabnim Ismail rounding out the bowling attack.

Only two players, India’s Mandhana and England’s Sciver, retained their places from 2019, the last occasion on which WCM selected a women’s cross-format team of the year.

WCM also named their men’s Test team of the year and picked a coach of the year in the latest issue. The edition also includes a women’s Ashes preview, featuring an exclusive interview with England captain Heather Knight, and an exclusive interview with England opener Danni Wyatt.
