Watch: Tim Paine hurls gloves away in fit of anger after questionable LBW dismissal caps disappointing Tasmania loss.

For the second time in 18 months, Tim Paine was at the wrong end of a result despite his team having bowled out the opposition for less than 70 in the first innings. You’ll remember the first: last year’s Headingley Ashes Test, when England were bowled out for 67 in the first innings but came back to win the Test by a wicket, with Ben Stokes playing one of the all-time great Test knocks.

On this occasion Paine’s was the last wicket to fall and the frustration certainly showed, as he stormed off the field, reportedly without congratulating the opposition, and flung his gloves away.

Paine’s extreme reaction presumably had something to do with the nature of his dismissal. He was trapped lbw by Australia teammate Mitchell Starc, in what viewers on Twitter said was a “questionable” decision.

While not quite as dramatic a finish, Paine’s dismissal did bring to an end a valiant rearguard effort, while also putting the seal on a stunning turnaround. New South Wales, bundled out for 64 in the first innings, kept the lead just under 200 before building a big advantage of their own.

Centuries from Nick Larkin, Moises Henriques and Sean Abbott boosted NSW to 522-6, with Starc also chipping in with 86*. It was presumed his reaction to being declared on would be the tantrum of the match, but Paine’s fury might well have Starc beaten.
