Pakistan spinner Sufiyan Muqeem registered outstanding figures of 5-3 in the second T20I against Zimbabwe on Tuesday (December 3), the best by any Pakistani in T20I cricket.
At the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, the hosts elected to bat first, looking to bounce back after losing batting second in the first T20I two days ago.
Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani got off to a brisk start, putting on 37 in 4.2 overs, but that was as good as it got for Zimbabwe as the next half an hour or so saw the innings completely come apart.
Marumani was caught off the bowling of Abbas Afridi in the fifth over, and Bennett followed suit in the next over, dismissed by Haris Rauf. Afridi then accounted for Sikandar Raza, and Agha Salman for Dion Myers to leave Zimbabwe 44-4 in 7.4 overs.
Muqeem entered the attack in the ninth over, and struck with his fourth delivery to trap Ryan Burl lbw with a well-disguised googly. He repeated the trick the very next ball, this time knocking back the stumps of new batter Tashinga Musekiwa before Wellington Masakadza kept out the hat-trick ball.
He got his man off the fourth delivery of his second over though, getting Masakadza to edge to slip and reduce Zimbabwe to 52-7. Muqeem's fourth victim was Richard Ngarava, whose stumps he hit two balls later. After Abrar Ahmed took the ninth wicket, Muqeem finished off the innings for 57 by dismissing Clive Madande off a miscued slog – finishing with 5-3 from 2.4 overs.
Muqueem's haul is now the best ever by a Pakistan bowler in T20I cricket, across genders.

Muqeem broke Umar Gul's record figures of 5-6, which the pacer had taken twice in his career – against New Zealand in 2009 and South Africa in 2013. He is also just the fifth player from Pakistan (and third man) to take a five-wicket haul in T20I cricket.
The best figures in women's T20Is for Pakistan remain Omaima Sohail's 5-13 against Sri Lanka, during the Women's Asia Cup in 2022 – an effort which helped restrict the Lankans to 112 and resulted in a five-wicket win for Pakistan.
