Ben Curran of Northamptonshire Steelbacks pulls the ball to the boundary during the Vitality T20 Blast match between Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Leicestershire Foxes at The County Ground on June 01, 2022 in Northampton, England

Ben Curran, brother of England internationals Sam and Tom, has earned his maiden call-up in Zimbabwe’s squad for their upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan.

Ben is one of the three sons of Kevin Curran, who played 11 ODIs for Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1987 before being their head coach between 2005 and 2007.

Now 28, Ben Curran is the latest from his family to receive an international call-up. His brothers Sam and Tom have played for England in all three formats, for 117 and 60 matches, respectively. While Tom's international appearance came in 2021, Sam is currently part of England's white-ball setup.

Ben, who played for Northamptonshire between 2018 and 2022, has been the leading run-scorer in Zimbabwe’s List A competition this year with an average of 64.50. A left-handed batter, he has also impressed in first-class cricket, averaging 74.14.

Besides Curran, Zimbabwe have also handed a maiden call-up to left-arm fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri, who was the highest wicket-taker (8) for Zimbabwe in the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa earlier this year. Unlike Ben, Nyamhuri has been named in both the ODI and T20I squads.

The three-match ODI series will start from December 17 with the preceding T20Is being played between December 11 and 14. The two sides will reconvene again in a two-match Test series from December 26, the squad for which is yet to be named.
