Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine became the third-oldest player to hit a Test hundred in the 21st century during the Boxing Day Test against Afghanistan in Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe are playing Afghanistan in a two-Test series at home. The ongoing Test in Bulawayo is only their second of the year. They won the toss and chose to bat first and have broken multiple records in the process of putting up a mammoth score.
Ben Curran, making his Test debut, scored a quickfire 68 off 74 balls while opening the batting, making it the sixth-quickest fifty-plus score by an opener on Test debut. The veteran Sean Williams then took over, coming in to bat at No.4, and struck a 154 at a strike rate of 88.50, hitting 10 fours and three sixes.
That wasn't enough punishment for Afghanistan bowlers as Ervine walked in to bat with the score reading 220-4 and piled on the agony. He added 163 for the fifth wicket in partnership with Williams, before adding 82 with Brian Bennet for the sixth wicket. Ervine was dismissed at the score of 465-6, having made 104 himself.
This was his fourth Test ton, and at the age of 39 years and 130 days, he became the third-oldest after Misbah-ul-Haq and Shivnarine Chanderpaul to score a Test hundred in the 21st century. Overall, Misbah and Chanderpaul have scored a combined eight hundreds aged more than what Ervine was aged at the time of scoring this century. Seven of those eight belong to Misbah, who also has five hundreds beyond the age of 40, and only one belongs to Chanderpaul.
Ervine's partner-in-crime, Sean Williams also creeped up on this list thanks to his 154. Currently aged 38 years and 92 days, Williams has become the third-oldest to score 150 or more in a Test in the 21st century. Younis Khan has two 150-plus scores aged more than this, while Chanderpaul has one.
The oldest player ever to score a Test century is England's Jack Hobbs, who made 142 against Australia aged 46 years and 82 days, way back in 1929.
