Rahmat Shah became only the second double centurion from Afghanistan, setting a new national record during the first Test against Zimbabwe.
Rahmat put on a 300-run stand with Hashmatullah Shahidi, the other Afghanistan Test double centurion, as the visitors put up a strong fightback to Zimbabwe's first-innings score of 586.
At the time of writing, this is the seventh-highest partnership for any wicket in Tests since 2020, and the highest-ever for Afghanistan in Test cricket. They broke the previous record held by Shahidi and Asghar Afghan during the 2021 Abu Dhabi Test against Zimbabwe. The two brought the deficit down to 199, grinding the Zimbabwe bowlers to dust with a partnership that has gone past 90 overs.
Rahmat also became the first Afghanistan player to hit multiple hundreds in Test cricket, before he was joined on that list by Shahidi. At stumps, Rahmat's score read 231*, with Shahidi on 141.
It was also the first time since 2019 that a whole day's play went without a wicket being taken.
