Afghanistan secured a crushing 232-run win over Zimbabwe in the second ODI in Harare, knocking over the hosts for 54 and setting a new team record in the process.
Zimbabwe elected to field first in the second ODI – a decision which proved to be their undoing. Afghan openers Abdul Malik and Sediqullah Atal put on a massive opening stand of 191 and were finally separated in the 35th over when Abdul was bowled by teenage pacer Newman Nyamhuri for 84.
Sediqullah managed to score his first century at international level but departed soon after for 104. Nyamhuri finished with 3-53 as Afghanistan posted 286-6.
In reply, Zimbabwe lost opener Ben Curran in the very first over after the batter chanced Hashmatullah Shahidi's arm for a quick single, only to be run out by a direct hit. The hosts lost their second, third and fourth wickets in the fifth, sixth and seventh overs as Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai wreaked havoc.
Teenage spinner Allah Ghazanfar then took over, striking twice in the 12th over to remove Sean Williams and Brian Bennett to leave Zimbabwe 32-6. Seamer Naveed Zadran struck with three more quick wickets to mop up the tail, before Ghazanfar removed Tinotenda Maposa to strike the final blow and bowl Zimbabwe out for 54. Sikandar Raza was left stranded, unbeaten on 19.
Biggest wins in men's ODIs, full list: Afghanistan set new team record
The 232-run win is now Afghanistan's biggest margin of victory in ODI cricket, and their only one by over 200 runs. Their previous best was a 177-run win over South Africa in Sharjah earlier this year, as they posted 311-4 before bowling the Proteas out for 134.
The men's ODI record remains India's win by 317 runs over Sri Lanka last year, where the Men in Blue slammed 390-5 before Mohammed Siraj's 4-32 helped bowl the Lankans out for just 73.
