Ireland running five runs against Zimbabwe

Watch: Ireland's Andy McBrine registered five runs off a single ball without any overthrows, against Zimbabwe in the one-off Test between the sides on Sunday.

In the first Test in cricket history to be held in Northern Ireland, the sides faced off in Stormont, Belfast starting from July 25. As the match entered day four on Sunday (July 28), the hosts were struggling at 33-5 in eight overs, in pursuit of a fourth-innings target of 158.

After all of the Irish top five had departed for scores of ten or fewer, wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker and Andy McBrine came together to try and help their side stay in the match before pushing for victory.

The pair scored a further 40 runs in the first nine overs of the day. As left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava continued his unbroken spell in the 18th over of the innings, the second ball was punched through covers by the left-handed McBrine.

The ball trickled towards the boundary, with Tendai Chatara in hot pursuit. He managed to chase it down, and pull the ball in. But the fielder's momentum took him over the ropes and beyond the advertising hoardings placed just outside.

Chatara was forced to hurdle the boards as the ball remained stationary on the field of play. With no other fielder providing him with support, Chatara had to get back on the field himself to throw it back to the bowler. By the time he could do so, McBrine and Tucker had managed to complete running five runs — without the help of any overthrows.

By the first drinks break of the day, the pair had put on 79 to take Ireland to 100-5, 58 runs short of victory.
