Smriti WPL

The third edition of the Women’s Premier League will start on February 14 as Gujarat Giants take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Here are the captains of each team, for the upcoming season.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have retained their skipper from the first two seasons as Harmanpreet Kaur led them to the trophy in the inaugural WPL season followed by another good outing in 2024 where MI were knocked out in the Eliminator.

Amelia Kerr, Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Yastika Bhatia are the other key batters in the side with Shabnim Ismail likely to be the leader of MI’s pace battery.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Another title-winning captain, Smriti Mandhanawill be leading her side out on the field yet again as RCB would be looking to defend their crown under the southpaw’s captaincy. The 28-year old will have her task cut out though, with Shreyanka Patil a major injury concerns for the season. Star all-rounder Ellyse Perry has also only recently returned from a hip injury.

Except for the duo, Sophie Molineux, Sophie Devine, Kate Cross, and Asha Sobhana have been ruled out of the upcoming WPL season owing to injuries or mental fatigue which have considerably weakened the title-winning squad from last season.

UP Warriorz

UP Warriorz skipper Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the WPL 2025 season with a right foot injury. In her absence, the franchise will be led by Deepti Sharma, who is an experienced campaigner but lacks captaincy experience at this level.

UP’s spin bowling trio of Sophie Ecclestone, Alana King, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad along with the top-order of Chamari Athapaththu, Kiran Navgire, and Tahila McGrath would be key for their chances of lifting the trophy in the upcoming season. The home crowd in the final leg of the competition in Lucknow could be a major boost for them.

Delhi Capitals

Meg Lanning will be the skipper for Delhi Capitals after leading the side to two consecutive finals but the Australian captain would be hoping for gold this time around after winning every trophy in international cricket.

DC probably has the strongest batting line-up with Shafali Verma and Jemmimah Rodrigues supporting Lanning in the top order followed by the likes of Alice Capsey, Annabel Sutherland, Sarah Bryce, and Arundhati Reddy in the middle order.

Gujarat Giants

Like UP, Gujarat Giants will be playing at home for the first time, and the Giants have also opted for a new skipper in Ashleigh Gardner. The Australian all-rounder has been a key figure in the Giants squad for the last couple of seasons and would be hoping to help them qualify for the knockouts for the first time.

With explosive batters like former skipper Beth Mooney, Deandra Dottin, Laura Wolvaardt Phoebe Litchfield and Simran Shaikh, the Giants will look a formidable unit if their bowling attack can click in the first few games.
