During RCB's WPL match against UP Warriorz today (February 24), Ellyse Perry overtook Meg Lanning to become the leading run-scorer in the history of the Women’s Premier League.
Lanning won the Orange Cap in the inaugural edition of the WPL after she scored 345 runs across the 2023 competition. With 253, Perry finished eighth on the charts in that year. By 2024, however, Perry had reduced the gap. While Lanning’s 676 runs were still the most in WPL history, Perry’s 600 at the end of last year's competition were only second to her tally.
The first four innings of 2025 fetched Lanning 106 runs. Perry, on the other hand, scored 145, reducing the gap even further, to 37 runs. Against UP Warriorz at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, she joined Danni Wyatt-Hodge at 23-1 after 3.4 overs.
Perry did not let the run rate drop, smashing two consecutive fours off Sophie Ecclestone in the fifth over. In the sixth, she lofted Saima Thakor over long-on for a colossal six. She went past Lanning in the 11th over, with a square cut off Chinelle Henry.
Wyatt-Hodge fell for a 41-ball 57, bringing a 94-run stand to an end, but Perry batted through the innings as RCB batters fell while going for the big hits. She finished on 90 not out from 56 balls, an innings that included nine fours and three sixes, as RCB finished on 180-6. By then, she had reached 835 runs – 53 clear of Lanning’s WPL aggregate.
It is worth a mention that Perry’s 6-15 against the Mumbai Indians at Delhi in the 2024 edition are the best figures in WPL history.
