Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been fined for showing dissent at the umpires' decision during her side's WPL 2025 match against UP Warriorz on Thursday (March 6).
In the 16th match of the 2025 season, Kaur won the toss and chose to put UP Warriorz in to bat first in Lucknow. After the Powerplay, the score stood at 50-0, as Grace Harris and Georgia Voll scored briskly.
Harris departed with the score on 74, before Voll went on to complete her maiden WPL half-century. But she was dismissed for 55 soon after Kiran Navgire, leaving UPW 90-3. From there, a middle-order collapse saw them slide to 125-7.
Harmanpreet Kaur involved in on-field argument against UP Warriorz
At the end of 19 overs, UPW were 143-7, and as leg spinner Amelia Kerr came on to bowl, the umpires were in discussion with Mumbai skipper Kaur, communicating that her side had fallen behind the over rate and had to bring an extra fielder inside the 25-yard circle. The broadcast showed that Mumbai were five minutes behind the rate.
Kaur did not appear happy with the decision, and remonstrated in lengthy and intense fashion with umpire Ajitesh Argal – who soon began to step away and motion that Mumbai simply get on with proceedings.
As Argal did so, the situation began to heat up as UPW batter Sophie Ecclestone walked up and spoke to the umpire, pointing at the Mumbai captain. Kaur did not take kindly to this, angrily stepping up to Ecclestone and seemingly asking her not to interfere in the discussion, before walking off to take her position in the field.
Kaur fined 10 per cent of match fee for showing dissent
This morning (March 7), the WPL said that Kaur had been fined – not for the altercation with Ecclestone, but for showing dissent at the umpire's decision.
A media release from the league read: "Harmanpreet Kaur, Captain, Mumbai Indians has been reprimanded and fined 10 per cent of her match fees for breaching the WPL Code of Conduct during her team’s match against UP Warriorz at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday.
"Harmanpreet Kaur admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 which relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during a match. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding."

UP Warriorz eventually posted 150-9, as Amelia Kerr picked up five wickets. Mumbai chased down the total with nine balls to spare, courtesy of opener Hayley Matthews' 68, and a brisk 37 from Nat Sciver-Brunt. UP remain rooted to the bottom of the points table, and are almost out of the competition.
