Australia beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in Sri Lanka in the last series of the group stage of the 2023-2025 World Test Championship. Here is the points table.
Australia beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the second Test of the two-match series, at the Galle International Stadium, to clinch the series 2-0. Trailing by 157 in the first innings, Sri Lanka managed to avoid the innings defeat but ended day three on 211-8, ahead by only 54.
There was no fairytale fightback from Kusal Mendis (50), one of the two unbeaten batters. They lost their last two wickets for only 20 runs on the fourth morning as Matt Kuhnemann finished with 4-63, Nathan Lyon with 4-84, and Beau Webster with 2-6.
Chasing only 75, Australia lost Travis Head (20) to Prabath Jayasuriya, but Usman Khawaja (27) and Marnus Labuschagne (26) saw them home before lunch. The series win, Australia’s first in Sri Lanka since 2011, also helped them retain the Warne-Muralidaran Trophy.
However, there was no change in position for either side in the 2023-2025 World Test Championship points table. Australia’s PCT rose from 65.74 to 67.54 but they finished second, while Sri Lanka stayed at sixth place despite their PCT dropping from 41.67 to 38.46.
Australia, the defending champions, will face South Africa in the WTC final at Lord’s in June.
