Australia qualify for WTC final

Australia beat India by six wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground to qualify for the 2023-25 World Test Championship final.

Defending champions Australia will play South Africa in the 2023-25 World Test Championship final, to be played between June 11 and 15 at Lord’s. South Africa had already qualified after their win against Pakistan at Centurion.

To join South Africa, Australia needed to win one (or draw all three) of their remaining three Tests: they got there before the two-match series in Sri Lanka. India, comfortably placed at the top of the table not too long ago, crashed out after a phase of eight Test matches where they won one and lost six.

After securing a four-run lead in the first innings, India began the third day on 141-6. Pat Cummins (3-44) and Scott Boland (6-45) shot them out in only 7.5 overs of cricket. India made only 157.

India’s fate was as good as sealed when they took field without Jasprit Bumrah in defence of 162. Australia came out all guns blazing, only to be halted by Prasidh Krishna’s (3-65) triple strike before lunch. Mohammed Siraj (1-69) reduced Australia to 104-4 after the break, but Travis Head (34) and debutant Beau Webster (39) saw them home.

This was the first time India lost a series against Australia since 2014-15. Over this period, they have won four consecutive four-match Test series – two in either country – all by 2-1 margins.
