Lucy Hamilton of the Heat celebrates after taking the wicket of Meg Lanning of the Stars during the WBBL match between Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat at Drummoyne Oval on November 17, 2024 in Sydney, Australia

Australia Under 19 pacer Lucy Hamilton has become the youngest to take a five-wicket haul in Women’s Big Bash League history, doing so for Brisbane Heat against Melbourne Stars today (November 17).

After being asked to bat first, the Stars were off to a steady start before Heat's Hamilton, bowling the fifth over, removed openers Yastika Bhatia (8) and Annabel Sutherland (21) in the space of three balls. No.3 & No.4 batters Meg Lanning and Marizanne Kapp tried to build a partnership, but the latter was soon dismissed by Grace Parsons for a seven-ball nine.

Hamilton, coming to bowl her second spell, struck off the first ball, snaring Lanning who nicked through to keeper Georgia Redmayne, reducing the batting team to 54-4 after nine overs. Her next victim was Tess Flintoff, falling for seven in the 11th over.

Hamilton finally completed a five-for off the penultimate ball of the 15th over. Deepti Sharma, batting then on six, tried to hoick her across the line but was undone but was undone by a slower delivery. The ball struck Deepti’s pad, and she was given lbw.

18-year-old Lucy Hamilton enters WBBL record books with 5-8

Aged 18 years and 193 days, Hamilton, who has also represented Australia's U19 team in two ODIs and nine T20Is, became the youngest player ever to claim a five-wicket haul in the Women’s Big Bash League. The previous record belonged to Hayley Matthews, who took 5-19 off 3.4 overs for Hobart Hurricanes in 2017 at 18 years 296 days.

Her figures of 5-8, including a maiden, are the same as the sixth-positioned Amanda-Jade Wellington on the list. Wellington was 24 years 179 days old when she achieved the feat for Adelaide Strikers in 2021.
