Keshav Maharaj became South Africa's most prolific ever Test spinner in their win over the West Indies

West Indies collapsed to a 40-run defeat to South Africa in Providence, conceding a 1-0 series defeat and continuing their losing streak against South Africa at home.

Having come into Day Three of the second Test under pressure, already more than 200 runs behind and with five Proteas wickets left to take, Jayden Seales gave the West Indies hope with his career-best figures. In combination with Jomel Warrican, the pair took the remaining South Africa wickets in less than 11 overs of the morning session, Seales finished with six-for. His figures of 6-61 equalled  Courtney Walsh for the second best figures for the West Indies against South Africa on home soil.

However, the home side still faced a tough challenge, needing 262 runs to win having been bowled out for 144 in their first innings. Opener Mikyle Lewis was also out early, falling for four off 16 balls less than five overs into the chase.

Kraigg Brathwaite was dismissed for 24 by Wiaan Mulder shortly after the Lunch break, before Keacy Carty had his stumps castled, again by Mulder. Kavem Hodge and Allick Athanaze then fell within 13 balls of each other before Jason Holder played a baffling shot to Dane Piedt, and ended up chipping the ball straight to Mulder at long on.

At 104-6, the chase was all-but over, with Joshua Da Silva and Gudakesh Motie at the crease. But the pair combined for a 77-run stand - the highest for the West Indies in the match - to take the required runs to less than 100. However, Keshav Maharaj dismissed both in consecutive overs to leave West Indies needing 81 with only two wickets left.

Temba Bavuma pulled off a superb diving catch to dismiss Shamar Joseph, before Maharaj took his fourth of the innings to get Seales and secure the result. That wicket took Maharaj to 171 Test wickets, taking him past Hugh Tayfield as South Africa's most prolific Test spinner of all time.

The result lengthens the West Indies' losing streak against South Africa. They last won a Test against the Proteas in 2007, but haven't won a Test against them on home soil since 2001. As the first match of the series was a draw, the series also goes to South Africa, who continue their unbeaten streak against the West Indies in multi-Test match series.
