Shamar Joseph five-for vs SA

South Africa were bowled out for 160 on day one of the second Test against the West Indies in Guyana today (August 15), thanks to a maiden home five-for from Shamar Joseph.

Having led the way in most of the first Test in Trinidad, South Africa made two changes for the second, bringing in an extra spinner in the form of Dane Piedt and replacing Lungi Ngidi with Nandre Burger. However, it was the change that West Indies made to their XI that had the first real impact on the game.

Shamar Joseph replaced Kemar Roach to play the first home Test of his career, and stuck gold immediately, taking a five-for to rip the heart out of the South African batting and give West Indies the upper hand.

Shamar Joseph shines, SA bowled out for 160

Joseph's heroics meant the visitors folded for 160 runs - the fourth-lowest they have ever been bowled out for against the West Indies in Test matches.

Jayden Seales started proceedings with a beautiful inswinger to the left-handed Tony de Zorzi to castle his stumps early in the morning session. Joseph then got rid of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma in the space of three deliveries to leave South Africa reeling at 20-3.

After a brief partnership, Jason Holder got Tristan Stubbs to outside edge a drive that was caught sharply by Kavem Hodge at third slip. After Joseph got David Bedingham caught behind for the team score of 78, the hosts would've been sensing an opportunity to bowl South Africa out for a two-digit score. Seales and Joseph combined to dismiss South Africa' No.7, 8, and 9 for ducks, before Piedt and Nandre Burger combined to keep the Proteas in the match. They put together South Africa's highest-ever 10th wicket partnership against the West Indies, putting on 63 before Burger was was trapped lbw by Gudakesh Motie.

Joseph's figures of 5-33 were only the second five-wicket haul taken by a West Indian fast bowler at Providence, Guyana. It was also only the fourth instance of a West Indian quick taking five or more wickets in an innings against South Africa in Test matches this century.
