West Indies pacer Jediah Blades had an ODI debut to forget on Thursday (December 12), setting an unwanted bowling record at Basseterre against Bangladesh.
Having wrapped up the series after wins in the first two ODIs, West Indies handed debuts to wicketkeeper Amir Jangoo and Blades, and chose to field first.
They got off to a fantastic start, as Alzarri Joseph struck twice in three balls in the third over to remove Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das. Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz walked in at No.4, and scored 77, putting on 136 for the third wicket with Soumya Sarkar (73) to rebuild the innings. Fifties from Mahmudullah (84*) and Jaker Ali (62*) lifted Bangladesh to 321-5.
Blades was entrusted with the second over of the innings, and bowled three overs inside the first Powerplay, conceding six, 11 and 12 runs respectively.
He returned for a second spell in the 21st over, but fared no better as Sarkar and Miraz took him for another 16 and then 12 runs in his two overs. At the end of five overs, Blades had conceded 57 runs.
He was taken out of the attack after that, but West Indies skipper Shai Hope brought Blades back for one more over – the 49th of the innings as Mahmudullah and Ali were set, and looking to tee off. The pair promptly took another 16 off Blades' sixth and final over, as he finished with 0-73.
Blades economy rate of 12.16 runs per over is now the worst for any bowler on ODI debut (min. five overs bowled).
Worst economy rate on ODI debut: Jediah Blades sets unwanted record
Blades broke the 16-year-old record of Peter Connell, who conceded 95 runs in nine overs on ODI debut for Ireland against New Zealand in Aberdeen. Despite not completing his allowance of ten overs, Blades' 73 runs conceded is in the top 25 for most runs conceded on ODI debut.
The 16 runs he conceded in his final over meant Blades also went past the women's ODI record of 11.9 runs per over, conceded by Ireland's Cara Murray (0-119 in 10 overs) against New Zealand in 2018.
