The West Indies named a 15-member squad for the three ODIs against Bangladesh, to be played at Basseterre on December 8, 10, and 12. Shai Hope will lead the side, while Justin Greaves has been recalled to the ODI side. An interesting inclusion is of Amir Jangoo, the Trinidad & Tobago wicketkeeper.

Who is Amir Jangoo?

Jangoo’s career makes interesting reading. At 27, he is not exactly young. Next month, he will complete a decade in professional cricket. His List A numbers – average 30.36, strike rate 69.71 – do not make impressive reading, neither do his two hundreds across 97 professional games (35 first-class, 49 List A, 13 T20). His T20 strike rate reads a mere 81 across his stints for the Jamaica Tallawahs and the Trinbago Knight Riders.

He is not known for exceptional glovework either: he keeps wicket for Trinidad & Tobago only when captain Joshua Da Silva is away on international duty.

However, Jangoo had an excellent run in the recently concluded Super50 Cup, the West Indies’ domestic List A tournament, which ended in bizarre fashion.

With 446 runs at 89.20 (and a strike rate of 86.77), he finished as the leading run-scorer of the tournament. This includes a run of 96, 70 not out, 111, 93 not out in four consecutive innings. Incidentally, Greaves (400 runs at 133.67 and 98.67), the only other batter with 400 runs in the competition, also earned a recall.

“Jangoo’s prowess in the CG United Super50 shows his flexibility to bring another dimension to our batting unit,” explained Daren Sammy, head coach of the senior West Indies men’s side.

Jangoo bats at three for Trinidad & Tobago, but it is not clear where he will bat for the West Indies, if he gets a chance to play.
