Sherfane Rutherford broke a West Indies team record on Sunday (December 8), as his maiden ODI ton helped the hosts to a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second ODI.

In the opening match of the three-game ODI series at Warner Park in St Kitts, the tourists won the toss and chose to bat first. They made a promising start, scoring 58-2 in the first powerplay thanks mainly to opener Tanzid Hasan.

Tanzid and skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz took Bangladesh through the first half of the innings, putting on 79 before Tanzid was dismissed for 60. Mehidy and Afif Hossain departed soon after, before a stellar 96-run stand between Mahmudullah (50*) and Jaker Ali (48) helped them to a challenging 294-6. Romario Shephard was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-51.

In reply, West Indies made a shaky start – losing openers Brandon King and Evin Lewis in the space of three deliveries, and ending the first powerplay at 42-2. Two middle-order partnerships helped them recover though – 99 runs between Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford and 95 runs between Rutherford and Justin Greaves. They eventually got over the line with five wickets and 14 balls to spare.

Rutherford was the star of the show, his 113 off 80 balls dotted with seven fours and eight sixes. It was his first century in ODI cricket, in his eighth innings, but also his sixth score of fifty or more in the format.

The knock also helped Rutherford go past former opener Desmond Haynes to set a new West Indian record.

Most runs in first eight ODI innings: Rutherford breaks West Indies record

Rutherford's scores in ODI cricket now read 6, 63, 3, 74*, 80, 50*, 54 and 113 – a total of 443 runs. This tally is the fifth-most of any player after eight innings in men's ODI history. The record is 627 runs, held by South Africa's Janneman Malan.

This tally is also the highest among players from the West Indies, with Desmond Haynes' 405 the previous highest. Sunil Ambris (361) and Ricardo Powell (356) are the only other West Indian men to have scored over 350 runs in their first eight ODI innings.

Rutherford also equalled a world record with his sixth fifty-plus score. No player in men's ODI history has gone past that mark more than six times in their first eight innings. England's Jonathan Trott also achieved this in 2009-10, with his first eight ODI innings reading 0, 87, 9, 52*, 94, 110, 69 and 53.
