Explained: Why Mehidy Hasan Miraz is leading Bangladesh against West Indies

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is leading Bangladesh in the first Test against West Indies

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is captaining Bangladesh instead of regular skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto in the ongoing Test against the West Indies in North Sound - here's why.

Bangladesh have started their West Indies tour with a two-Test series, the first of which began on Friday (November 22) at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Winning the toss on day one, the visitors chose to field first and ended the day having taken five West Indies wickets at the cost of 250 runs.

All-rounder Miraz, who is leading the Bangladesh side, bowled 16 overs for figures of 1-47 as two West Indian batters made nineties (Mikyle Louis - 97, Alick Athanaze - 90). For the visitors, Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with 2-46 from his 15 overs.

Why is regular captain Shanto not playing?

This is Miraz's first Test as captain, leading in the absence of Shanto, who has been ruled out of the series due to a groin strain. Shanto was injured during the second ODI against Afghanistan and was not named in the squad for the two-Test series against West Indies.

"We have received the team physio's report and the scan report, which has confirmed a Grade II strain on his left groin," a BCB physician had said in a statement after the injury. "This will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. We will reassess his condition after two weeks. He will return home from the UAE to continue his rehab."

Along with Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim is also out injured, having suffered a finger injury during the first ODI against Afghanistan earlier this month.

22-year-old Shahadat Hossain is Shanto's replacement in the squad as well as in the playing XI. So far, he has played four Tests, having scored 118 runs at 14.75.

After the first Test, the two teams will meet in Kingston, Jamaica for the second Test, before playing three ODIs and three T20Is with the tour ending on December 19. The Bangladesh squad for the white-ball games hasn't been named yet.
