At Kingston, Nahid Rana ran through the West Indies lineup to take 5-61, the seventh-best figures by a Bangladesh fast bowler.
After bowling out Bangladesh for 164 during the rain-hit Test match at the Sabina Park Cricket Ground, the West Indies had ended the second day on 70-1. They seemed in control before Nahid ran through them to return career-best figures of 5-61. From 85-1, the hosts were bowled out for 146.
Until this Test match, Nahid – the fastest Bangladeshi bowler to play at this level – had taken 14 wickets from five Test matches at 45.57 apiece. The average dropped to 36.78.
Nahid’s figures are the seventh-best (and only the 14th five-wicket haul) by a seamer from Bangladesh, who do not have a rich legacy of fast bowling. No Bangladeshi fast bowler has even 80 Test wickets, and only Mashrafe Mortaza (78) and Shahadat Hossain (72) have more than 50. Not great numbers for a side playing Test cricket for 24 years.
While that is true, it is heartening that four of the nine best Test figures on the list are from 2024. These include Taskin Ahmed’s 6-64 from the first Test match of the ongoing series. Two of the other five-wicket hauls were in 2022.
