From Zimbabwe’s perspective, there are some key highlights ahead of the series – it’s Dave Houghton’s first Test series as head coach, and also marks the return of Gary Ballance, who last played the format in 2017 (for England). Sean Ervine will lead the side.
For West Indies, it will mark the maiden assignment of Brian Lara as the performance mentor of the side. It comes at a critical juncture for the West Indies cricketing setup, with a three-member review panel (also including Lara) suggesting that WI cricket might “cease to exist” if international cricket doesn’t get priority over T20 leagues. For this series, they have called back seasoned pro Shannon Gabriel, in the absence of Jayden Seales. Also joining the side will be Gudakesh Motie and Jomel Warrican. Gabriel last played for West Indies 14 months ago.
Both matches will be held at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, hosting its first Test since West Indies last visited them, in 2017.
