Anderson, who will be retiring after the ongoing Test against the West Indies after playing 188 games, was honoured by the England team as he was asked to lead the side out on the field following the national anthems as they elected to bowl first.
The capacity crowd gave the most successful seamer in Test cricket a standing ovation, while his daughters Lola and Ruby rang the five-minute bell before play started as a visibly emotional Anderson looked on.
The ritual of the ringing of the bell at Lord’s on the morning of a Test match dates back to 2007 when West Indies were welcomed into the historic stadium with Vivian Richards, Peter Baxter and Garfield Sobers being the bell-ringers.
Anderson bowled the first over of the game and had figures of 0-11 after his first five overs with two maidens.
