Ben Stokes' middle stump knocked out by ripping Motie turner

West Indies' left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie undid England captain Ben Stokes with a peach of a delivery during the first Test between the sides at Lord's.

England won the toss and chosen to bowl first yesterday (July 10), in veteran James Anderson's final Test match. Pacer Gus Atkinson stole the show on Day 1, as Atkinson took 7-45 on Test debut, the second-best figures by an Englishman in their first match. The visitors were bowled out for a paltry 121.

The hosts got their chance to bat later on Day 1, and played flamboyantly to reach 189-3 in 40 overs, a lead of 68 runs. Opener Zak Crawley top-scored with 76.

On Day 2, Harry Brook and Joe Root resumed batting, attempting to extend the lead. Brook was the first to fall on the day, as an Alzarri Joseph bouncer saw him top-edge a pull shot to wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva, bringing England captain Ben Stokes to the crease.

Off the final ball of the 55th over, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie tossed one ball up outside the off stump to Stokes. The ball drifted ever so slightly away from the England captain, tempting him into a booming cover drive. But the ball landed just inside the line of his bat, on the bowlers' footmarks created at that end, before spinning viciously to knock his middle stump clean out of the ground.

Once he realised he had been bowled, Stokes registered astonishment at the delivery before nodding grudgingly in acknowledgment of the bowler's skill.
