West Indies' Shamar Joseph hits the roof at Trent Bridge with a six

West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph put on a show with the bat during the second Test against England, even chipping off a part of the Trent Bridge roof during his innings.

At the start of play on Day Three, West Indies were 351-5 in response to England's 416, trailing by 65 runs. At the crease were Jason Holder and wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva, but the former departed early on, nicking Chris Woakes through to keeper Jamie Smith.

West Indies' No.8 Kevin Sinclair came and went quickly, for just four as Gus Atkinson prised him out. Alzarri Joseph then threatened to entertain, but Woakes got rid of him as well, before bowling Jayden Seales first ball to leave the visitors 386-9, still 30 runs behind.

Last man in for West Indies was Shamar Joseph, who had been part of a heroic lower-order resistance against Australia at the Gabba earlier in the year. He successfully kept out the hat-trick ball from Woakes before da Silva, batting on 44, then attempted to farm the strike as much as possible.

The keeper dominated the scoring in the early phase of the partnership, before Joseph came into his own with boundaries off Woakes and Atkinson. In the 107th over of the innings, Atkinson's 25th, the No.11 took things to the next level.

After defending the first delivery of the over, Joseph swung at a short-pitched ball just outside his eyeline, sending it flying over the ropes on the leg side. Two balls later, Atkinson tried to bounce him again but this time Joseph picked up the ball and deposited it behind square leg, hitting the roof of the stadium in the process and dislodging a few loose tiles, showering debris onto a few spectators.

The third short ball of the over saw Joseph top-edge the ball, and it flew away down to fine leg for a boundary. After two more boundaries, off Shoaib Bashir and Mark Wood, Joseph eventually perished for 33, leaving da Silva stranded on 82 not out at the other end. But by this point, the pair had put on 71 runs for the final wicket and helped their side to a 41-run lead.

Earlier in the match, the star turn with the bat for West Indies had come from Alick Athanaze (82) and Kavem Hodge (120). Ollie Pope was the standout with the bat for England in the first innings, scoring 121.
