Gus Atkinson celebrates a wicket

An England side with a fresh feel to it sealed a 3-0 series victory over West Indies to start their home Test summer. Here's how the 12 England players used across the series fared:

Zak Crawley: 5/10

97 runs @ 24.25; one fifty, HS: 76

A quiet series after his brisk fifty at Lord's. Crawley was run out backing up in the second innings at Trent Bridge and didn't bat in the Edgbaston run chase after injuring a finger.

Ben Duckett: 6/10

178 runs @ 44.50; two fifties, HS: 74

Two failures and two seventies at Trent Bridge, the first of which was scored at record-breaking pace.

Ollie Pope: 8/10

239 runs @ 59.75; one hundred and two fifties, HS: 121

Made hay on a flat pitch at Trent Bridge, although the England vice-captain was the beneficiary of dropped catches either side of reaching fifty. Pope passed fifty in three of his four innings, a welcome return to form following a tough start to the domestic season with Surrey.

Joe Root: 9/10

291 runs @ 72.75; one hundred and two fifties, HS: 122

Root scored a majestic hundred at Trent Bridge and it was telling that our first sighting of his reverse scoop was after he reached three figures. The former England captain batted with a welcome level of grit and determination; his 87 at Edgbaston rescued England out of an awkward position.

Harry Brook: 7/10

197 runs @ 49.25; one hundred and one fifty, HS: 109

A mixed series for England's No. 5. Irresistible in the second innings at Trent Bridge but he was also guilty of gifting his wicket away cheaply on a couple of other occasions.

Ben Stokes: 8/10

192 runs @ 48; no hundreds and three fifties, HS: 68

Five wickets @ 34.20; no five-fors, BBI: 2-25.

Stokes' return to full fitness with the ball is a game-changer for the balance of the side. He is a much more adaptable bowler than he is often given credit for. He is quick enough, able to swing the ball prodigiously, capable of bowling long spells and is accurate. Three fifties signalled a return to form with the bat.

Jamie Smith: 8.5/10

207 runs @ 51.75; no hundreds and two fifties, HS: 95

14 catches

A practically flawless series behind the stumps dulled concerns around his capability as a gloveman, while he twice displayed why he is such a highly rated talent with the bat. His 95 at Edgbaston was a real statement knock.

Chris Woakes: 8/10

134 runs @ 33.50; no hundreds and one fifty, HS: 62

11 wickets @ 21.36; no five-fors, BBI: 4-84

A quintessential Woakes home series where he returned a practically identical set of numbers to his overall career record in England. He started rustily at Lord's but grew into the series. Like Stokes' bowling, Woakes' batting gives the side balance and needed batting depth and his command over the old Dukes ball provides England threat throughout an innings.

Gus Atkinson: 9/10

22 wickets @ 16.22; two five-fors, BBI: 7-45

An outstanding debut series. He started with a bang at Lord's but as the series went on, Atkinson showed that he is a multi-faceted red-ball bowler, quick enough to hurry set players and able to move the ball laterally in multiple ways. A strike-rate of 24.2 balls per dismissal is illustrative of the threat he possesses.

Mark Wood: 8/10

Nine wickets @ 20; one five-for, BBI: 5-40

Bowled with serious pace. His spell on the final day at Edgbaston was pure destruction, snaring five wickets in a breathless six-over spell after lunch.

Shoaib Bashir: 7/10

Nine wickets @ 27.22; one five-for, BBI: 5-41

Bashir's inclusion over Somerset teammate Jack Leach was one of the biggest calls made by the England management ahead of the series. His Trent Bridge five-for demonstrated his immense potential; his height, natural pace and threat to right-handers as well as left is a tantalising combination of attributes that England are clearly keen to nurture.

James Anderson: 8/10

Four wickets @ 14.50; no five-fors, BBI: 3-32

The first Test was all about the retiring Anderson and rightly so. Fittingly, Anderson actually topped England's series bowling averages.
