Australia’s second Test against the West Indies got underway today (January 25) at the Gabba in Brisbane. The hosts named an unchanged XI from the one that was victorious in Adelaide last week.

Before the start of the second Test, however, the Australian camp was struck by the Coronavirus. Travis Head, Cameron Green, and coach Andrew McDonald tested positive. Of them, Head recovered in time, but McDonald and Green had to be separated from the group.

Despite that, Green is featuring in the XI for Australia. Cricket Australia’s Covid protocols allow players to play despite testing positive with some restrictions in terms of coming in close proximity to other players on the field. As a result, Green stood apart from his teammates during the national anthem ahead of the game.

Steve Smith had reassured on the eve of the match that despite the test results being positive, Green was doing physically okay. “He’s fine,” Smith said. “No physical drama at all, just tested positive. Him and Andrew McDonald are both fine.”

Towards the end of the first Test, Usman Khawaja was hit on the jaw by a Shamar Joseph bouncer, raising concerns of concussion. He was, however, declared fit to play the day night Test in Brisbane in time.

West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first. After a sedate start, they lost their captain Kraigg Brathwaite in the eighth over of the day as he edged a Josh Hazlewood delivery behind to the wicketkeeper. As the Australians came together to celebrate, Hazlewood had to ask Green to stay away as he appeared to have forgotten about the covid protocols.
