Watch: West Indies debutant Marquino Mindley, playing at No.11 in his his first Test innings, casually hit Mitchell Starc for a six during day three of the second Australia-West Indies Test.
Mindley’s Test call-up came on the back of an injury crisis in the West Indies camp, which forced them to, among other changes, rush in a 36-year-old club cricketer as emergency sub-fielder, and force an injured Kyle Mayers to retake the field.
Mindley himself was flown over from the Caribbean as a last-minute cover, playing the Test 48 hours after getting off the flight. It wasn’t an auspicious start: two overs into his first spell, Mindley had to hobble out after injuring his hamstring. He didn’t return to bowl throughout Australia’s first innings.
With West Indies 171-9 in response to Australia’s 511-7 declared, Mindley returned to the field with a bat in hand. Giving Roston Chase company, he hung around for a 43-run last-minute stand, eventually remaining unbeaten on a 32-ball 11. Along the way, he hit Mitchell Starc for a six.
In the 68th over, Starc angled one on to the leg stump: the right-handed Mindley nonchalantly picked up the length and flicked it past deep fine leg for a six.
