Joe Root falls to screamer off Jofra Archer

Watch: Joe Root was out to a stunning catch behind the stumps by Alex Davies in The Hundred today (August 10), as he attempted to cut Jofra Archer for consecutive boundaries.

Both the England stars were in action at the Utilita Bowl in Trent Rockets' fixture against Southern Brave. Root was stepping out for his fourth Hundred match of the season, having scored 32 off 23 in Rockets' last outing, contributing to a win over London Spirit. Archer has been an integral part in Southern Brave's campaign, taking three wickets in his four previous matches this year.

Batting first, Trent Rockets reached 46-0 off their first 28 balls before Brave struck, Danny Briggs dismissing Tom Banton. Root came to the crease just three balls later when Adam Lyth was out, and scored a single off his first ball. He struggled to pick up the pace, and reached 12 off 10 balls by the time Archer came on with 40 balls left in the innings.

Dealt a slower ball with room on the off-side from the speedster first up, Root played his trademark cut-shot, sending the ball to the ropes for his second four of the innings. Archer sent down a near identical ball to follow-up, but this time it was slightly closer in to Root's body and moved away slightly through the air.

Root looked to cut again, but only managed to get a thick outside edge. The ball went behind the stumps, with Davies putting in a dive. Despite the ball coming off the bat at more of a first slip angle, Davies managed to grasp the ball in his outstretched right glove, tumbling to the ground and managing to hold onto the ball.

Southern Brave celebrated, but Root threw his head back in frustration, and had to return to the dugout for 16 off 12. Rockets went on to set Brave 127 to win.
