At Nottingham during the 2024 edition of The Hundred, Trent Rockets fast bowler John Turner had to be taken off the attack without him bowling a single legal delivery.
On August 7, Trent Rockets won the toss against London Spirit, batted first, and posted 166-4 at Trent Bridge. Alex Hales top-scored with a 42-ball 68, while Tom Banton (36 in 25 balls) and Joe Root (32 in 23) chipped in with support. For the tourists, Richard Gleeson claimed 2-32, while Olly Stone conceded 19 from 15 balls.
Imad Wasim (2-26) responded with two quick wickets. And once Rashid Khan (4-24) came along, the Spirits were left in disarray at 52-5 after 37 balls. Rashid’s scalps included Keaton Jennings, who had made an 18-ball 31 out of that total.
Spirit’s hopes rested on Andre Russell, who took the score to 80-5 after 70 balls in the company of Matt Critchley. Then John Turner came on to bowl for the first time in this edition of The Hundred.
Turner’s first ball was too high, but Critchley managed it to play past backward point for a run. The umpires signalled no-ball for height.
Unfortunately, Turner followed it with another very high ball as well. This one – and Turner can be very fast – hit Russell on the shoulder. Turner walked up to him presumably to apologise, and all was well... but the second no-ball meant that his night with the ball was over.
Turner’s figures, 0-0-5-0, were a throwback to Abdur Rehman’s even more spectacular 0-0-8-0 at the 2014 Asia Cup.
As for the match, Lewis Gregory replaced Turner. Critchley (37 in 30 balls) and Russell (23 in 15) pushed hard, but the hosts had caused enough early damage for any of that to matter. The Spirit were bowled out for 144, and will remain at seventh place. The Rockets, meanwhile, jumped to third spot.
