Former England men’s head coach Chris Silverwood has signed a coaching role offer from Oval Invincibles for The Hundred.
Silverwood will link up with defending champions Oval Invincibles as their assistant coach for the men's version of The Hundred. The announcement came after he stepped down as Sri Lanka Lanka's head coach last month in the aftermath of their group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup. During his tenure, Sri Lanka won the 2022 Asia Cup played in the T20 format, and also reached the finals in the ODI edition in 2023.
The decision also marked Silverwood's return to English cricket, having prior experience of coaching in the country. After joining England's men's team as fast-bowling coach in 2018 following a rare County Championship title with Essex in the previous year, Silverwood became the head coach of the team in all three formats in 2019. He was axed from his role at the beginning of 2022 after a disastrous 4-0 loss to England in the Ashes.
Silverwood, 49, also represented England as a fast-bowler between 1996 and 2002.
Among the Oval Invincibles backroom staff, Silverwood will join head coach Tom Moody and fellow assistant coaches Jim Troughton and Matt Walker.
Silverwood not the only English coach to have a homecoming
In another major announcement, former England wicketkeeper James Foster joined London Spirit as an assistant coach, linking up with head coach Trevor Bayliss. Having coached various franchises globally and worked previously with England and New Zealand internationally, Foster replaced Paul Collingwood, who will be busy with England's Mens Test Team throughout the competition.
London Spirit also named two new assistant coaches for the women's team, bringing in Ali Maiden, formerly World Cup-winning Assistant Coach with the England Women's team, and Sunrisers’ Marc Broom.
