Watch: Roelof van de Merwe held onto a special rebound catch, which left even Joe Root amazed during the 2023 Hundred game between Birmingham Phoenix and Welsh Fire on Thursday (August 11).
Welsh Fire’s Moeen Ali was dismissed for a 13-ball 17 when van der Merwe took a one-handed stunner after the ball bounced off his head. Moeen went after a good length delivery by David Payne, and swung across, with the ball going towards long-on. Van der Merwe, who ran forward, comfortably settled under the ball, but it popped out after he got a hand to it. It went on to hit his head before hitting his shoulder and deflecting towards the fielder’s right, and it seemed an opportunity was missed as he tried to juggle for the catch.

However, the alert van der Merwe swiftly dived to his right with an outstretched hand, always keeping his eye on the ball and eventually holding on, leaving everyone in awe. Root, who was commentating on Sky Sports during the incident, termed it “absolutely crazy”.
