In the 17th match of the Men’s Hundred between Southern Brave and Welsh Fire on August 12, the Braves won the toss and elected to field first. Barring Stephen Eskinazi’s 34-ball 38, no other Welsh batter could score more than 20 as they folded for just 87.

Tymal Mills took a hat-trick in his 4-13 off 20 balls. In response, the top three of the Southern Brave completed the chase with more than 40 balls to spare. Allen scored 31 off 22 balls, while Devon Conway and Leus de Ploy were unbeaten on 35 off 25 and 17 off 12 respectively.

One of the highlights of the match was a helmet cam footage captured when Allen was batting against Shaheen Shah Afridi. Shaheen, who has a knack for picking early wickets with the new ball, had a relatively ineffective game by his standards.

Shaheen bowled the 15th ball of the Southern Brave innings from over the wicket. He pitched it short and angled it across Allen. Having made up his mind to play the scoop, Allen had been getting into position when he realised that it would not be easy to execute.

He changed his shot at the last instant and reverse-scooped the short ball over short third for four instead.

The footage from the helmet cam captured just how terrifying it is to face a bowler of Shaheen’s pace. The ball appeared to come at Allen almost before he could blink.

It also demonstrates how good Allen is, given how he not only spotted the ball but adjusted his shot last minute and executed it to perfection.
