After England announced their squad for the upcoming World Cup at the beginning of the week, all eyes were on those selected as well as those who narrowly missed out. Some of those involved in the Ashes Tests were also back in action this week, while some were rested to allow time off before the internationals kick off again.
Jonny Bairstow
After taking a break following the end of the Ashes series, Bairstow returned to action in the Hundred with a duck last week. His returns didn’t improve by much this week, with just the one innings and a nine-ball three against Trent Rockets.
David Willey
Having gone wicketless in three consecutive innings, Willey made two crucial breakthroughs against Trent Rockets. He got both openers, trapping Dawid Malan lbw with a big inswinger from his first ball of the match, before he also dismissed Alex Hales in his next set.
Dawid Malan
It’s been a tough week for Malan, who was dropped by Trent Rockets for their two most recent matches. He was the leading run-scorer in last year’s competition, but has a high score of 11 so far this year. After four innings, his run tally for the tournament stands at 28.
Joe Root
A 23-ball 35 was Root’s most notable contribution this week. That innings was full of his usual tricks, the ramp shot off Jamie Overton being particularly eye-catching. Promoted up to open for the following game alongside Hales, he was out for a-run-a-ball eight.
Will Jacks
An explosive 68 from 42 balls against London Spirit was the highest score of Jacks’ competition so far. Left out of England’s World Cup squad this week, he hit four sixes and six fours in Invincibles total of 189 at the Kia Oval. He also returned bowling figures of 1-1 in Invincibles latest match.
Jason Roy
A couple of starts for Roy this week. He scored 23 against London Spirit before a 20-ball 28 against Southern Brave.
Sam Curran
Curran took a wicket in each of the Invincibles’ matches this week. He scored a crucial 35 off 17 balls against Spirit as half of a 61-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen from 26 balls.
Sam Billings
Billings’ difficult tournament continues. He scored 2 not out against Oval Invincibles and was out for two-ball duck against Southern Brave.
Zak Crawley
After last week’s impressive quickfire thirty against Trent Rockets, it has been a more sedate week for Crawley as his push to break into England’s white-ball sides continues. He scored 19 from 21 balls, opening at the Kia Oval before a-run-a-ball 12 against Northern Superchargers.
Dan Lawrence
Lawrence scored an emphatic 93 last week against Trent Rockets, and continued his good form this week with 24 off 11 balls against Oval Invincibles. He was bowled by Adil Rashid for four off six in his latest outing however, as London Spirit stayed in the competition with a 13-run victory over Superchargers.
Chris Jordan
Back in action after an injury layoff, Jordan took 1-20 on his return – Benny Howell his only victim. However, he was superb against Oval Invincibles, dismissing Klassen, Roy and Billings to finish with figures of 3-20. He also scored 15 runs off 10 balls in the chase, but couldn’t quite get the Brave over the line.
Rehan Ahmed
Rehan took his best figures (3-22) of the competition so far against Birmingham Phoenix. He trapped Jamie Smith lbw with his second ball before bowling Ben Duckett with a vicious googly after being kept on for a second consecutive set of five. Dan Mousley became his third scalp thanks to a good leg-side stumping from Devon Conway.
Ben Duckett
Duckett’s best contribution this week was a 17-ball 27 against Southern Brave, before he made a nine-ball four against Birmingham Phoenix.
Liam Livingstone
A pair of huge sixes off Rehan and Tymal Mills towards the back-end of the innings formed part of a 25-run cameo from Livingstone against Southern Brave. He was less explosive against Trent Rockets, however, his nine runs coming from 15 balls.
Moeen Ali
Moeen picked up a wicket in each of the Phoenix’ games this week. He bowled James Vince with a sharp turner in Southampton, and had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught at long on at Trent Bridge. He was less successful with the bat, registering two consecutive single-figure scores.
Chris Woakes
Woakes went wicketless against Southern Brave and conceded 20 runs from his 15 balls. He got back into the wicket-taking column in the Phoenix’ latest match against Trent Rockets, dismissing Daniel Sams for 20.
Phil Salt
Salt scored a ridiculous 86 off 32 balls against Trent Rockets. He hit five sixes and 12 fours, including an exquisitely timed flick over the leg-side boundary, pushing the Originals total to 181-6 in their victory at Trent Bridge. He followed that innings up with an 18-ball 28 against Northern Superchargers on Sunday (August 20).
Jos Buttler
Buttler rediscovered his form of the opening stages of the competition in Manchester Originals’ latest match on Sunday. He scored 75 off 47 balls, and batted almost through the innings. He was eventually bamboozled by a fuller ball from Rashid.
Harry Brook
Following his omission from England’s World Cup squad, Brook top-scored for Northern Superchargers against London Spirit. He was dismissed by Tom Hartley for a seven-ball two as the Superchargers were bowled out for 83 by the Originals.
Reece Topley
Topley dismissed Crawley and Ravi Bopara at Lord’s, and took a wicket against the Originals. The Superchargers lost both matches this week, however, and are now effectively out of the competition.
Josh Tongue
Tongue has had a superb week in the competition, taking five wickets in two matches. He took 3-32 against Trent Rockets, including Alex Hales and Colin Munro, and 2-20 against Northern Superchargers.
Adil Rashid
Rashid took 4-18 against Manchester Originals, only upstaged by Calvin Harrison’s record-breaking 5-11 in the same game. He ripped through the Originals top-order, dismissing both Salt and Buttler as well as taking the wickets of Paul Walter and Jamie Overton.
