The uncapped Indian quick became the first bowler this year to breach 154 kph (95.7 mph), taking the top spot on the list of fastest balls in IPL 2022 from New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.

However, Malik endured a tough evening otherwise, conceding 48 runs from four wicketless overs, days after claiming 5-25 against table-topping Gujarat Titans.

The first record-breaking thunderbolt summed up his game, with Ruturaj Gaikwad able to get enough bat on ball to earn a streaky boundary and bring up his half-century. Gaikwad ended up dismissed one short of his century, having also thumped Malik for a pair of glorious sixes down the ground, one each over the off- and leg-side.

Malik later reached 154 kph for a second time, with former India captain MS Dhoni digging out the rapid, pinpoint yorker for a single.

CSK ran up 202-2 on the back of Gaikwad’s stellar effort, triumphing by 13 runs.

Malik has enjoyed a breakout campaign after being retained by SRH ahead of the IPL 2022 mega-auction. Regularly breaching the 150 kph mark, he has received high praise from several pundits, including former England batter Kevin Pietersen, who called for Malik to make his India Test debut against England in July.
