Watch: Chennai Super Kings have signed 19-year-old Matheesha Pathirana for the remainder of IPL 2022, a Sri Lanka bowler with a Lasith Malinga-esque action after Adam Milne picked up an injury that ruled him out of the tournament.
Pathirana, 19, first gained attention back in 2020 when he was picked in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2020 U19 World Cup at the age of 17, returning without a wicket in the two games he played.
He also took part in this year’s tournament where he took seven wickets from four games at an average of 27.28 and an economy rate of 6.16.
Pathirana, who was a reserve player for CSK in 2021, has replaced Milne in the squad after the New Zealand quick suffered a hamstring injury during a game against Kolkata Knight Riders, and has been signed up for INR 20 lakh. At this point in his career, Pathirana has played just two senior T20 games – both in 2021 – and is yet to play a first-class game.
