The Australia wicketkeeper was given out lbw despite replays suggesting the ball had deflected off his glove before hitting his pad.

The incident occurred in the sixth over of Gujarat Titans’ clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Wade attempted to sweep his fellow countryman Glenn Maxwell, but failed to achieve the desired contact, with the No.3 given out after an appeal.

Wade reviewed instantly, gesturing with his bat to suggest he felt he had hit the ball. However, despite replays appearing to show a deviation before the ball made contact with his pad, UltraEdge revealed no spike as ball passed bat and glove, and so the on-field umpire was instructed to return to his original verdict.

The decision came under scrutiny, with several suggesting Wade should have been reprieved.

Wade made clear his displeasure as he left the field, shaking his head repeatedly even as Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli attempted to console him. When Wade returned to the Gujarat Titans’ dressing room, his frustration became clearer, as he shouted, threw his helmet to the ground before repeatedly smashing his bat.

The UltraEdge technology has come under the scanner before during IPL 2022, with Rohit Sharma and Kohli both given out in contentious circumstances.

Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the playoff stage, with their status as table-toppers secure. For Royal Challengers Bangalore, a victory would leave them on 16 points, and in the top four for the time being.
