There are ten teams in this edition of the IPL, with Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans being the two new entrants into the league. All the teams will play 14 games each. The sides have been divided into two groups of five: with each side playing the other team in the group twice. CSK were the winners of the last season of the IPL.

The prelude to the season involved an IPL mega auction held in Bengaluru in February 2022. While the sides were allowed to retain a number of players, the franchises bought the majority of their players in the mega-auction. Thus, each of the franchises will bear a new look in IPL 2022.

The entire tournament is going to be held in Mumbai and Pune. Three stadiums in Mumbai – Wankhede stadium, DY Patil stadium and Brabourne CCI stadium, and Pune’s MCA stadium will be used for the IPL.
The top four sides in the league stage qualify for playoffs, with net run rate playing an important role alongside total points gained. The third and fourth teams play the eliminator with the loser eliminated from the tournament. The winner of the eliminator and the losing team in the qualifier play the second eliminator (Qualifier 2) and the winners will face the winners from the first Qualifier (Team 1 vs Team 2) in the finals.
The final of the tournament is all set to be played in the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 22, 2022.
