Notably, the list doesn’t include Eoin Morgan, despite the England captain leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL final last year. Here is a summary of all the English players who have landed a contract. There are some familiar faces, surprising omissions, and a shock late-comer.

English players sold at the IPL 2022 auction

Liam Livingstone
Punjab Kings, INR 11.5 crore

Livingstone is the most expensive foreign player in this year’s auction. The man who scored England’s fastest T20I hundred of all time, off 42 balls against Pakistan last year, was bought by Punjab Kings for a sum equivalent to £1.1m.

Jofra Archer
Mumbai Indians, INR 8 crore

Despite being ruled out of this year’s IPL through injury, Mumbai Indians forked out on Archer to secure his services for the 2023 season and beyond. Formerly of Rajasthan Royals, Archer won the Most Valuable Player award for his performances in the 2020 IPL. While it’s a risk for Mumbai to buy him when there is so much uncertainty surrounding his fitness, Archer’s match-winning quality is undoubted.

Mark Wood
Lucknow Super Giants, INR 7.5 crore

The charismatic quick from Durham is joining one of the new teams for 2022 – Lucknow Super Giants. He’s only ever played one match in the IPL, and that was back in 2018 for Chennai Super Kings. Wood was in excellent form in the 2021/22 Ashes, and he’ll be hoping to bring that level into his first full IPL campaign.

Jonny Bairstow
Punjab Kings, INR 6.75 crore

Bairstow will join Liam Livingstone at Punjab Kings, ending his successful stint at Sunrisers Hyderabad for whom he oncehit 114 off 56 balls in 2019. While his red-ball career has faltered in the last five years, Bairstow has become one of the most consistent white-ball batters around; in seven IPL matches last year he scored 248 runs at an average of 41.

Chris Jordan
Chennai Super Kings, INR 3.5 crore

Famed for his yorker, and capable of adding value with the ball elsewhere in the innings, and with the bat and in the field, Chris Jordan was the subject of a bidding war between CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was snapped up by Dhoni’s side, joining the IPL 2021 champions.

Jason Roy
Gujurat Titans, INR 2 crore

Bairstow’s opening partner in ODIs, Jason Roy was bought by Gujurat Titans at what appears to be bargain price. Roy has been in sparkling form in the ongoing PSL, including a blistering 116 off 57 balls, and if he can bring that form with him to Gujurat then he could end up being one of the best deals of the year at INR 2.0 crore.

Tymal Mills
Mumbai Indians, INR 1.5 crore

Mills joins Archer and Jasprit Bumrah in Mumbai to form a fearsome bowling attack for MI. The Sussex seamer previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2017 when he took five wickets in five matches at an average of 30. He’ll be hoping to improve those stats this year.

Sam Billings
Kolkata Knight Riders, INR 2 crore

Billings’ excellent form for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash has earned him a place in KKR’s squad for 2022. The Kent man scored 284 runs in nine matches at an average of 40 before earning his maiden Test call-up in Hobart. He’ll be a valuable asset to the Eden Gardens-based franchise.

Alex Hales
Kolkata Knight Riders, INR 1.5 crore

There’s a touch of irony to Hales’ signing by KKR given they were captained by Eoin Morgan last year. While Morgan went unsold in the auction, Hales will return to the IPL with Kolkota having previously played for Mumbai Indians and Kolkota Knight Riders in 2015 and 2018 respectively.

David Willey
Royal Challengers Bangalore, INR 2 crore

Willey was snapped up late on by RCB and will head to Bangalore for his second IPL season having played for Chennai Super Kings in 2018. Willey has an excellent average of 22 in T20Is and RCB will be hoping he can replicate that form in red and black.

Benny Howell
Punjab Kings, 40 lakh

The surprise package of the auction from an England perspective, Howell bags his first IPL contract at the age of 33. Never capped by England, Howell has an excellent bowling average of 19 across 144 T20s, and will add useful depth to Punjab Kings bowling as well as bringing lower-order batting value to the team.
