Chasing 222 for victory, the Rajasthan Royals’ innings was carried single-handedly by Sanju Samson. He came in to bat in the first over after Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed off the second ball, and took no time to unleash as he crossed 40 inside the powerplay of an IPL game for the first time in his career.

While others around him played cameos, no one scored more than 30. At the ed of 15 overs, RR were 159-3, needing another 63 off the last five when Samson smashed a slot ball down the ground towards long on.

Shai Hope was stationed at the deep. He judged the overhead catch perfectly, but had to pay close attention to the boundary rope as he was extremely close to it. He managed to stay inside and the DC fielders celebrated.

The decision was referred to the TV umpire, who after looking at it from several angles, adjudged that it was a clean catch. However, not everyone was convinced, including the entire RR dugout, as well as a majority of the fans and experts watching the game. Most felt that some part of Hope’s boot had touched the rope at some point.

Samson had an animated chat with the umpires after the dismissal, before reluctantly walking off. He even tried signalling for a review, but that didn’t materialise.

Samson made 86 off 46 balls, his fifth 50-plus score of the season. RR eventually lost the game by 20 runs.
