Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, the in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad openers, strode out after Pat Cummins won the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and opted to bat.
Mitchell Starc bowled the first over of the match. Head pushed the first ball to cover. Abhishek wanted a single, but Head turned it down.
Starc’s second ball was pitched on a good length. It moved away from the left-handed Head, who overestimated the movement as he went for a slog, and played outside the line as a reason. The ball sped through the gate and felled the off- and middle-stumps.
This was the second time in three balls that Head was clean bowled by a left-arm fast bowler bowling from over the wicket. Arshdeep Singh of the Punjab Kings had bowled him first ball in the last league game of SRH.
Andre Russell took a well-judged catch at cover off Vaibhav Arora to send Abhishek back in the next over. Starc struck twice more with consecutive balls in the fifth over to leave SRH in tatters. At the end of the powerplay, they were 45-4 in five overs with Rahul Tripathi (24) and Heinrich Klaasen (5) at the crease.
