Dhoni walked out to a rapturous roar in Lucknow during the 2024 Indian Premier League after the fall of Moeen Ali’s wicket in the 18th over and took a single on the first ball that he faced. He hit a four off the next legal delivery he faced before walking across the stumps and playing a scoop shot against Mohsin Khan to get going.

He hit successive boundaries – a six and a four – before ending with another four to stay unbeaten at the end of CSK’s innings. His second six was massive: Yash Thakur, who picked up a five-for earlier in the season, bowled a slot ball, which was sent miles away for a six that was over 100 metres.

Dhoni’s record in the ongoing edition is at his blistering best: He has scored 87 runs in five innings this year and is yet to be dismissed. His strike rate is 255.88 and he has smashed eight sixes.

Chennai scored 176-6 in their 20 overs with Ravindra Jadeja making a 40-ball 57.
