Mumbai Indians’ five IPL titles are matched only by Chennai Super Kings. Across the first five seasons, Mumbai had reached the final only once, and had lost on that occasion. But when they lifted the trophy in 2013, and went into an amazing run, reclaiming it in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Since then, they underwent a slump. They failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2021, and fared worse in 2022, finishing at the bottom of the points table for the first time. However, they turned things around in 2023 to finish fourth.

The team has undergone changes over the past three years. Kieron Pollard retired to assume a coaching role for the franchise. Krunal Pandya moved to the Lucknow Super Giants, and Hardik Pandya as captain of the Gujarat Titans.

In a stunning development ahead of the season, Mumbai sold Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore, acquired Hardik, and named him captain, while retaining Rohit Sharma, who had led them to title glory five times.

MI in IPL 2024: Team news and injury updates

Mumbai will have a new captain for the first time since 2013. Having batted up the order for Gujarat Titans, Pandya may choose to reprise that role and use himself at various parts of the innings with the ball. Nabi and Shepherd can be dangerous down the order, while in David and Tilak, they have two hitters who can bowl.

Bumrah may find himself leading an inexperienced pace attack. To pair him, Mumbai are likely to use onf oe Thushara, Madushanka, and Coetzee.
