Bumrah was hit for 18 runs in his first over by Jake Fraser-McGurk, but the India quick bounced back strongly, conceding only 17 runs in his next three, which included getting the crucial wicket of Pant. The Delhi Capitals skipper was batting on 29 off 18 with two fours and as many sixes when a slower short ball greeted him on the first delivery of the 19th over by Bumrah.
The left-hander was unable to get on top of the ball and only ended up miscuing a pull to deep backward square leg, where Rohit Sharma held onto an easy catch. Pant was patted on the back by the bowler as he departed after falling to Bumrah for the seventh time in 14 innings, the most by any bowler.
The wicket also helped Bumrah top the list of most wickets taken in the 2024 Indian Premier League, taking the Purple Cap after the match. He currently has 14 scalps in nine games, joint with Harshal Patel, but with a better economy rate. Bumrah has conceded only 6.63 runs this year even as the run rate continues rising, the lowest among all bowlers who have sent down at least 10 overs this season.
