Shaw was ignored for Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25

Prithvi Shaw has put out an emotional post on social media after being sacked by Mumbai for the 2024/25 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Shaw was not included in Mumbai's 17-member squad, which will be led by IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer. The group has been selected for the first three games, with Ajinkya Rahane, their skipper in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, opting out due to personal reasons.

Shaw was part of the Mumbai squad that won the T20 tournament last week, scoring 197 runs at 21.88. The strike rate stood at an impressive 156.34, including a 26-ball 49 in the quarter-final against Vidarbha. However, he did not find a spot for the 50-over tournament, having also missed the 2023/24 edition due to a knee injury.

The axing also comes a day after Iyer's jab at Shaw's work ethic.

“We can't babysit anyone, right? Every professional who is playing at this level, they need to know what they should be doing," Iyer said. "And he has also done it in the past; it's not that he hasn't. He has to focus, he has to sit back, [and] put a thinking cap on, and then figure out himself. He will get the answer by himself."

Shaw was also dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad on grounds of fitness and general conduct, adding to a long list of controversies that have damaged his career so far.

Not long after Mumbai's squad went public, Shaw put out a story on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of his List A numbers. In 65 matches, he's scored 3,399 at 55.72 with a strike rate of 125.74, including ten centuries and 14 fifties.

Along with the statistics, Shaw wrote a note: "Tell me God, what more do I have to see.. if 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126, I'm not good enough... but I will keep my faith in you and hopefully people believe in me still.. cause I will come back for sure.. OM SAI RAM..(sic)"

Mumbai began their campaign against Karnataka, with the squad selected to also face Hyderabad and Arunachal Pradesh in the same week.
