Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando (C) celebrates after taking the wicket of New Zealand's Tom Latham (L) during the second day of the second Test cricket match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle

Sri Lanka have annihilated New Zealand in the second Test at Galle, strengthening their position at No.3 on the World Test Championship table. Here’s the updated WTC table after the second SL vs NZ Test.

Sri Lanka recorded a stunning victory against New Zealand on Saturday, winning the match by an innings and 154 runs. Opting to bat first, the hosts declared their first innings at 602-5. Kamindu Mendis, promoted up the order in the series after a rapid start to his Test career, starred with a 250-ball 182 not out.

Kamindu became the joint-second-fastest to 1,000 Test runs, equalling the record held by Donald Bradman. He is also on the verge of breaking several other long-standing batting records. Dinesh Chandimal (116), Angelo Mathews (88) and Kusal Mendis (106*) also played their part in racking up the mammoth score.

In reply, New Zealand collapsed to a record low against Sri Lanka, getting dismissed for 88 during their first innings at Galle. They were asked to follow on, making it the first time since April 2023 that a team was asked to do so in Test cricket.

Devon Conway (61), Tom Blundell (60), Glenn Phillips (78), and Mitchell Santner (67) showed some fight but it was too much to ask for as New Zealand were bundled out for 360 runs.

WTC points table: New Zealand drop to No.7

Sri Lanka solidified their position at No.3 as their points percentage has improved from 50 to 55.56. On the other hand, New Zealand slipped from fourth to seventh place, with a current PCT of 37.5. England (4th), Bangladesh (5th) and South Africa (6th) have risen a place.
