In a press conference ahead of India’s tour of Sri Lanka, head coach Gautam Gambhir assured that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still have some cricket left in them.
India’s tour of Sri Lanka, for three T20Is and three ODIs, will be Gautam Gambhir’s first as head coach of India. Ahead of the tour, Gambhir attended a press conference in Mumbai.
Of the several questions asked, one featured the future of Rohit Sharma, India’s captain in Tests and ODIs, and Virat Kohli, Rohit’s predecessor in the role. Both Rohit and Kohli retired from T20Is after India’s triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup, as did Ravindra Jadeja.
"Lot of cricket left in them," Says Gautam Gambhir
“I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup as well,” reminded Gambhir. “One thing I can be very clear of is that both those guys have a lot of cricket left in them.
“More importantly, with the Champions Trophy (2025 in Pakistan) and a big tour of Australia (2024/25), obviously they would be motivated enough. And then, hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 World Cup (in Africa) as well.”
By the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, Rohit will be 40, while Kohli will be close to his 39th birthday. Regarding their availability, Gambhir said: “This is a very personal decision. I can’t say how much cricket is left in them. Ultimately, it’s up to them as well. It’s up to the players how much can they contribute to the team's success, because ultimately it’s the team that is important.
“But looking at what Virat and Rohit can deliver, I think they still have a lot of cricket (left). They’re still world-class players and obviously any team would want to have both of them for as long as possible.”
