Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul

India will play Sri Lanka for three ODIs and three T20Is from July 27: here are all the squad reports and latest updates from the IND vs SL tour.

India will tour Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series beginning on July 27, and three ODIs from August 2 will follow. Gautam Gambhir will take over as India’s head coach from the series and there have been plenty of speculations about how the squad could shape up.

India name T20I and ODI squads for Sri Lanka - SKY named T20I captain

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Ꮪhubman Gill (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Ꮪhubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana.

Suryakumar Yadav has been made India's new men's T20I captain following speculation that he was set to take charge following Rohit Sharma's retirement. Hardik Pandya had previously been widely expected to take over the captaincy, having been India's vice-captain in their T20 World Cup win. However, reports emerged earlier this week that Yadav would be preferred over Hardik by new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Rohit and Kohli set to play ODIs

According to an Indian Express report, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made themselves available for the ODI series. The report also suggests that Riyan Parag might be a dark horse to be selected in both the squads.

Selection meeting postponed

According to various reports, selectors were originally supposed to meet and announce the squad on Wednesday (July 17). But the meeting has been postponed for Thursday (July 18) with no official update from the BCCI.

Rohit Sharma to make himself available for ODIs?

A Cricbuzz report suggests that there's a possibility of Rohit Sharma featuring in the ODIs, since India don't have a lot of 50-over games scheduled before the 2025 Champions Trophy. He is expected to inform BCCI of his availability before the selection meeting takes place.

Suryakumar Yadav likely to lead India in T20Is

According to a report from ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI is likely to name batter Suryakumar Yadav as captain for the T20I series, rather than Hardik Pandya, who was vice-captain under Rohit Sharma. Apparently, Pandya's long-term fitness issues have tilted the scales in Yadav's favour.

The squads for both formats are likely to be announced on Wednesday (July 17).

Reports - Gautam Gambhir keen to play a full-strength ODI squad

New head coach Gambhir is keen to tour Sri Lanka with a full-strength squad even as various news reports suggest the senior players will give the series a miss. India have just six ODIs, including three against Sri Lanka, before the Champions Trophy next year, and Gambhir is eager to make full use of the games in front of him. India will also have a six-week break after the Sri Lanka series, which makes Gambhir more eager to go ahead with a first-choice squad.

Hardik Pandya likely to skip Sri Lanka ODIs

According to several reports, Hardik will lead the Indian team for the three T20Is against Sri Lanka but will not play the subsequent ODI series due to personal reasons. Hardik has reportedly conveyed his decision to the BCCI.

Rohit Sharma not thinking about retirement yet

Rohit Sharma has said to fans that he is not yet thinking about an overall retirement from cricket. When asked about his career plans for the future in the inauguration of a CricKingdom academy in Dallas, he stated, "I don't look that far ahead, so clearly you will see me playing at least for a while."

Revised dates announced for India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka

BCCI have announced the revised dates for India's tour of Sri Lanka, with the T20I series now beginning on July 27, a day after it was originally scheduled to start. The remaining matches will be played on July 28 and 30. The ODIs will begin from August 2.

Gambhir to meet selectors next week

Incoming coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to meet chief selector Ajit Agarkar and team to discuss India's squad for Sri Lanka. According to Hindustan Times, Gambhir will meet the selection committee to debate over the specifics of the touring unit.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli likely to skip the ODIs

Rohit and Kohli have already retired from the T20I team and it is also unlikely that they will play the three ODIs that follow. Despite India playing just six ODIs before the 2025 Champions Trophy, for which Rohit has been confirmed as the skipper, including the three against Sri Lanka, the two senior players are likely to monitor their workload ahead of a hectic Test season.

Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to play either T20Is or ODIs

Bumrah, the Player of the Tournament during India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign, is expected to be rested for either format against Sri Lanka. The injury-prone quick is likely to be granted a period of rest by the BCCI in preparation for the forthcoming Test series against New Zealand and Bangladesh, which will be followed by an arduous five-match tour of Australia.

KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya to lead ODI and T20I squads?

After Rohit’s retirement, one of India’s immediate tasks will be to officially name their next T20I skipper. Hardik, the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, is expected to take over the role from the Sri Lanka T20Is.

Rahul, only the second India skipper to win an ODI series in South Africa last December, will reportedly lead the squad for the 50-over games, according to ANI. Hardik was India’s designated vice-captain during the ODI World Cup in 2023 and was succeeded by Rahul after he was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury.

Shreyas Iyer expected to return

Iyer has not been given a central contract for his failure to prioritise domestic cricket but is likely to return to the set-up during the ODI series against Sri Lanka, as per PTI. Iyer has been a consistent run-scorer in the format, averaging 49.64 in 54 innings, and shone in the World Cup last year with 530 runs from 11 games. He also hit two hundreds and three fifties, including a knock of 105 in the semi-final.
