Steve Smith scored his 36th Test century during day two of the second Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at Galle.
Smith continued to enjoy his newly-found mojo with the bat, hitting his second hundred of the series. After resorting to his familiar back-and-across stance in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Smith hasn’t looked back, and brought up a fourth century in his last five Tests.
He brought up the landmark off 191 deliveries, hitting a drag-down from Kamindu Mendis for a four off the last ball of the 63rd over of Australia’s innings. The boundary brought the visitors within nine runs of Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 257.
The century was Smith’s 17th away from home (excluding Tests at neutral venues), the fifth-most ever by a Test player, drawing him level with Alastair Cook and Brian Lara.
It is now also the most among all Australia batters in the format. Smith was previously level with Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh, on 16 away Test hundreds.

Virat Kohli and Younis Khan are the other two players with 16 away Test tons. In the all-time list, Sachin Tendulkar, with 29 overseas centuries to his tally, heads the exclusive club. Rahul Dravid (21) and Jacques Kallis (20) are the other two with 20-plus away from home.
In Asian conditions, it was Smith's seventh ton – level with Hashim Amla, Joe Root and Kane Williamson among non-Asians. Only Alastair Cook (9) and Kallis (8) have registered more on the continent.
