Kuhnemann suspended

Australian left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann’s bowling action has been reported to the ICC.

Called up to the Australian squad during the India tour of 2022-23, Kuhnemann got two wickets at Delhi before routing India with 5-16 on the first morning at Indore. He toiled hard without much success on a flat surface at Ahmedabad.

He had to wait for nearly two years for his next Test match as Australia stuck to Nathan Lyon as their main (often only) spinner. When Lyon was injured during the 2023 Ashes, they replaced him with Todd Murphy.

Matthew Kuhnemann reported for suspect action

Being recalled for the Sri Lanka tour of 2024-25, Kuhnemann claimed 16 wickets in two Tests at 17.18 as Australia stormed to a 2-0 win. After five Tests, Kuhnemann’s Test career stands at 25 wickets at 22.20. Before playing Test cricket, he had also played four ODIs in Sri Lanka in 2022.

After the second Test in Sri Lanka, however, the match officials reported his action to the ICC. “The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter,” ran a Cricket Australia statement.

“Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four one-day internationals,” added the statement. “He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action been questioned.

“Cricket Australia will liaise closely with the ICC and independent experts in line with ICC regulations. No further comment will be made by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the matter is resolved.”
